Property Description

The old town of Rethymno is one of the best-preserved towns of Europe’s Renaissance. Lying in the heart of modern Rethymno, its narrow streets combine the oriental features of the Turkish period with Renaissance period Venetian architecture. After the Venetian conquest of Crete (1204), the town of Rethymno was built according to the rules of Venetian architecture. The original craftsmen were Venetians but these later were replaced by Cretan murari, Venetian-trained master builders.

Because the town’s location is behind a promontory on which the Venetian period fortress known as the Fortezza stands out as a defensive barrier to sea invaders, the layout of Rethymno is directly linked to the sea, with the main Venetian street, the Ruga Maistra (today’s coastal Venizelou Avenue) running parallel to the shoreline. The opposite is true of Heraklion and Chania, where both towns are closed to the sea for reasons of defence and the main streets are set at right angles to the coast.

In the prefecture of Rethymno, the historic village of Anoyeia is situated on the slopes of Crete’s tallest mountain, Mount Psiloreitis which is also called Mount Idha. When exactly Anoyeia was founded and by whom is not accurately known. Many believe that the original settlement was founded by villagers from the village of Axos, which is located at a short distance to the west of Anoyeia, close to where the Minoan town of Oaxos was.

According to a legend known to the inhabitants of Anoyeia, a shepherd from Axos found one day on one of the slopes of Mount Psiloreitis an icon depicting Saint John, the Baptist. Pious as he was, he picked it up carefully, wrapped it in a towel, took it to his home and placed it there alongside the other icons. On the following day he was astonished to find out that the icon had disappeared. Terrified, he went back to the place where he had found it the day before. He was exhilarated to discover that the icon was exactly in the same location. This inexplicable phenomenon was considered to be an order from the heavens, to build in that exact location a church dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. The village grew around the church. The people of Anoyeia are famous across Crete for their proud independence and artistic creativity, especially their strong musical traditions. Many of Crete’s most respected musicians were or are from here.

During the course of this excursion, in Anogia, our vehicle will stop at a traditional Cretan taverna for a light lunch, a selection of Cretan meze. Water and soft drinks are included.

The village of Margarites is 30 kilometres south east from Rethymno town approximately in the centre of the island of Crete. Located in picturesque green rolling hills, the village is well known for its pottery and attracts large tour buses in the busy season. The traditions of producing pottery in this village, due to the fine clay deposits found in the streams and river valleys nearby, most likely go back to Minoan times, over three and a half to four thousand years ago. It is a pleasure to stroll around this very charming village and admire the work of its many pottery studios.
