Property Description

Day 1 : Heraklion

Arrival in Heraklion. Transfer to the Hotel in Heraklion city and leisure time. Dinner at the hotel.

Day 2 : Gortys – Phaestos – Matala

Breakfast is followed by a full day excursion to Gortys, Phaestos and Matala. The day starts by taking the road to the south of the island. Our first stop is at the archaeological site of Gortys, a classical Greek and Roman city, where on the walls of the Odeon we admire one of the most ancient and most complete known examples of a code of ancient Greek law. We continue towards the area of the Messara plain, famous for the fertility of its soil and its wealth in fruit and vegetable cultivation. Exploring the theme of the magnificent legacy of the Minoans, we visit the Palace of Phaistos, the second most important palace of Minoan Crete. From Phaistos we drive to Matala, whose beauty as a beach made it renowned in ancient mythology as well as in more recent times. The sandstone rock face, with its caves, at one end of the beach, all seeming to slide into the sea due to the geological stratifications, make this one of the most extraordinary and unusual beaches in the Mediterranean. Lunch in a restaurant in Matala is followed by the opportunity for a swim at the beach. We then drive back to our Heraklion hotel for dinner and our over-night stay. Dinner and overnight in Heraklion.

Day 3 : Knossos – Archaeological Museum Heraklion

Excursion to Knossos – the former palace of King Minos. Minos was, we believe, the title given to the kings of this first great European civilization whose first stirrings were approximately contemporaneous with those of Ancient Egypt and Ancient Mesopotamia (Iraq) in the final centuries of the fourth millennium BCE, so over five thousand years ago. Afterwards, we visit the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion where many of the beautiful art and artefacts, excavated from Knossos, are on display. After lunch and the visit to the museum, you can walk in Heraklion, the largest city and the administrative capital of the island of Crete. It was founded by the Arabs who came from Andalusia via Egypt and who founded the Emirate of Crete, moving the island’s capital from Gortys to a new castle which they called rabḍ al-ḫandaq, ربض الخندق, ‘Castle of the Moat’ in the 820s. We will make a little shopping tour in the capital of Crete. Dinner and overnight in Heraklion.

Day 4 : Traditional Crete

The group will have lunch in the hotel instead of dinner. In the afternoon at 16.00, departure for Peza and a visit to the area’s winery.  Firstly we will see how Cretan wine is produced and of course one can have a taste of it. The main attraction at the end of this day will be a Cretan Evening with traditional dance and dinner in a typical tavern at the village of Karouzanos. Overnight in our Heraklion hotel.

Day 5 : Lassithi Plateau

Departure with luggage. Excursion to Lassithi Plateau with a stop at the monastery of Vidiani and then, on to the cave of Psychro. It is probably the most famous cave of Crete, the main attraction in the area of Lassithi. Here, according to ancient Greek mythology, the father of the ancient Greek gods – the great Zeus – was born. In continuation, you may enjoy practicing your skills in … making pottery, in one of the local workshops. Lunch break in Tzermiado, in a traditional tavern of the area, Tzermiado being the main village of the Lassithi plateau. After that, a visit to Krasi, a humble mountain village with the oldest plane tree in Europe; it dates from the 4th century B.C. Arrival at our Aghios Nikolaos or Elounda area hotel. Dinner and overnight in our hotel in the north eastern part of the island.

Day 6 : Spinalonga – Agios Nikolaos

After breakfast, we take a full day excursion to north-eastern Crete. Our first stop, Elounda, is a famous tourist attraction, much visited by VIPs for its renowned seaside hotels. From the little harbour of the village of Plaka, we embark on a small traditional boat to go across to the Island of Spinalonga, the former leper colony, enclosed by a Venetian fortress. On the way back, we take our lunch in one of the traditional restaurants of the region, at Plaka. On the way to Agios Nikolaos, you will have the chance to enjoy a visit to a local distillery of essential oils produced from Crete’s many indigenous herbs  and enjoy a tea break of these herbs. Our next stop is the lovely town of Agios Nikolaos with the possibility to have a stroll in the centre with its so-called “bottomless” lake. Return to the hotel in the north eastern part of the island for dinner and overnight.

Day 7 : Southeastern Crete

Departure from our hotel near Agios Nikolaos or Elounda for Mochlos in our private bus  that will drive us along the coastline of the Bay of Mirambello to the coastal village of Mochlos, opposite from which, two hundred metres away, is the small island of Mochlos. On the island are the ruins of an ancient Minoan port. Mochlos Island is also one of the major European nesting places of the peregrine falcon, flaco peregrinus, specifically of the sub-species, flaco peregrinus brookei. Lunch in Mochlos, then drive  to Pachia Ammos, from which we head to Ierapetra, one of the four main towns of Lassithi. Visit of the fortress. Dinner and overnight in our hotel in the north eastern part of the island. End of guiding services.

Day 8 : Aghios Nikolaos or Elounda Area

Transfers by pre-booked chauffeur driven vehicle or hire car to the pre-booked accommodation for the continuance of your stay on Crete or transfer to the airport of Heraklion for your journey home.
