Rich in tradition and ancient sites, Crete is an endless source of archaeological findings and places of inspiration. Known as the centre of the Minoan civilization, its museums cover a long period from the Neolithic and Roman times.
One such example comes from the Archaeological Museum of Rethymno with various exhibits like vessels and statuettes as well as the Historical Museum of Heraklion. Of major interest are the folklore museums which present a whole view of the age-old traditions and local art. A fine collection of rare icons is shown in the Byzantine collection of Heraklion while copies of the paintings and costumes of El Greco, the famous painter can be seen in the homonymous museum.
